Online Blackjack Rules

Blackjack is one of the most popular card games played in real and online casinos. Blackjack is also known as Pontoon, 21 or Vingt-et-un and is a fun game based on a mixture of chance and skilled decision making. There are several variations of Blackjack to play including European Blackjack and Multi-deck Blackjack.

The Players of Blackjack bet not against each other, but against the card Dealer (in the case of online casinos, the Dealer is the computer).

Every Players aim is to get a higher card score than the Dealer without going over the score of 21. The Ace card can have a value of 1 or 11 to be decided by the Player at the time it is dealt, cards 2-10 are counted at face value and the King, Queen and Jack represent a score of 10.

All bets are placed by the Players, 2 cards are then dealt to each Player by the Dealer (these may be face up or face down depending on Casino rules) including 2 cards to himself - one of which will be visible to the Players, the other hidden. This is known as the 'hole' card and is only revealed once all the Players have played their hand.

If a Player has a score of 21 on his 2 dealt cards (a 'natural 21' - an Ace and a 10-count card) he immediately wins unless the Dealer also has a 'natural 21' which means no-one wins - this is known as a 'push'. If just the Dealer gets a 'natural 21', the Dealer wins and the game ends.

If there is no 'natural 21' each Player in turn can choose to request another card ('take a hit') or stay with his current total ('stand') as close to or exactly at 21. If the Players score goes over 21 he has gone 'bust' and loses the bet.

When all Players have finished their hand, the Dealer reveals his own score. The Dealer must 'take a hit' on a score of 16 or less and can only 'stand' when he achieves a score of 17 or more. If the Dealer goes 'bust' the Players win the bet.

The winner is the Player or Dealer closest to or with a score of 21.

Summary

  • Aim to get a higher card score than the dealer without going over 21.
  • The dealer must hit on a score of 16 or less and can only stand when he achieves a value of 17 or more.
  • In standard play all cards are reshuffled after each hand. (Some Blackjack variations occur)

Special Plays

All online casinos have their own Blackjack Rules of Play. Below are some special play rules that may be included:

  • Split
If you have two cards of the same value, you can choose to split your cards into two hands and play each hand separately. Your original bet is duplicated and each hand played as usual.
  • Double Down
By doubling down you are dealt one more card, your turn will then end and your bet will be doubled.
  • Insurance
If the dealer’s up-card is an ace, the player may wish to take out 'insurance'. By taking out insurance, the player is betting that the dealer's unseen card is a 10 valued card. The bet is generally half of the player’s original bet.
